ABOUT THE BOOK

Some answers have to be discovered.

Nine-year-old JJ is frustrated by school and by adults who seem to expect him to accept answers he does not understand. His father, Jim, responds with an unusual story: he once opened his eyes on a bench in a vast hall where hundreds of people watched scenes from their lives.

After slipping away from a line leading toward a blinding light, Jim wanders into a strange landscape and meets a man who refuses to tell him where they are. The man—eventually known as Mac—teaches through questions. As the journey moves through forests, ponds, schoolhouses, villages, homes, parks, and hospitals, the lessons become increasingly practical: observe, communicate, choose, take responsibility, and learn the difference between what you know and what you merely assume.

Years later, those memories become conversations with JJ on a bench at the foot of his bed. Then Jim and Mac find a frightened boy who cannot remember where he belongs, and Jim must stop being the student and become someone else's guide.

A father-son story grounded in ordinary questions, choices, mistakes, and growth.

Mystery

Where is Mac's impossible landscape—and why does Jim remember being there?

Choice

The story keeps returning to the difference between receiving an answer and discovering one.

Meaning

Accessible speculative fiction exploring memory, responsibility, mortality, and what makes a life meaningful.

“Mac's central gift was never a set of answers. It was the ability to look, ask, decide—and know the difference between knowledge and belief.”
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jim Baudanza

Jim Baudanza is a Phoenix-based web, digital, and IT professional and business owner whose work has centered on building and solving practical systems for businesses and clients.

The Bench grew out of stories and conversations he shared with his children, combining family life with memories and ideas he has carried since childhood. His systems-oriented background shapes the novel's direct way of exploring abstract ideas through practical problems, decisions, and consequences.

The Bench: My Conversations with Mac is his debut novel and is currently being prepared for representation and publication.

WHY THE BENCH?

A place to stop long enough to ask the next question.

The bench is both the story's recurring setting and its simplest idea: important lessons do not always arrive in classrooms. Sometimes they begin in conversation, when someone is willing to listen, look, and work out an answer for himself.
